May 2005 - Indoor
Hovering (Old video, try another)

I came back from my local flying spot with
about 30 seconds air time. The weather forcast said 4mph winds today,
bollox it was gusting 15mph at times and I just don't know this Hornet
well enough to chuck up in such variable conditions. So I came back
bored and ended up hovering in a 11ft square empty room again :(. At
least the heli is still in good condition in one piece.
June 05 - HornetX3D Field Test Video
(Old video, try another)
Nothing to really test the stock X3D yet,
just trying to get better familiarised. At this point I am not able
to fly any better than with my old FP, it just all happens a bit faster
now. Does fly well I think, if a little nervously piloted. Whoops, I
just noticed the canopy is a bit pissed up at the nose. Should look
more stream lined with the boom etc. Ah that's why I couldn't fly it
properly!!!
I was using quite odd soft throttle curves for 2200-2400
rpm, ok for cruising around but bogs top end full pitch.
Normal thr-> 0 40 50 77 95 pitch->0 30 50 70 90
Idle1thr->100 85 70 85 100 pitch->90 70 50 70 90
Instead of using Gov mode 80 80 80 80 80, would have
been 2600-2800 rpm

June 05 - HornetX3D Luminous Video (Old video, try another)
Luminous painted stickers.
This video is like the Field Test video above. Slightly better.

...for what it's worth, here's a couple
of 365g climbouts from hover to max on this current setup. Any
further gains will come from loosing some weight.

June 06 - Lighter Flybar
Test Video
Here's a little test clip, nothing new
from me but it is Hornet footage :).
Taken after nervously flying and filming my glitchy Ikarus
Airwolf.

Testing a different flybar and cyclic setup
without weights, using
the video as reference. Futaba s3108 servos on outer most holes
and light weight 3D paddles without any flybar weights.
Tx Swash menu:
P:itch 24% (+9/-12 degee swing, -12 whoops! no wonder it bogged out)
Aileron and Elevator 90%
(98-100% causes slight servo buzz when not spooled up)
Cyclic Dual rates 75%
Cyclic Expo rates -75% for thumb flyer.
Soft stick centre for easier hovering.
Switched from Normal mode to Idle1 at the start, then flew for ~9 mins.
Throttle curves:
Norm: 0 30 47 66 90 (2600 rpm hover, pack fades to 2400 rpm)
Idle1: 100 80 70 80 100 (2900 rpm hover, pack fades to 2600 rpm)
Idle2: 100 85 80 85 100 (2950 rpm hover, pack fades to 2600 rpm) not
used that flight
You can just about verify the actual RPM by taking low frequency sine
wave audio measurements like the method descibed here.
All you need is a good audio editor that can give you accurate sample
lengths like Sony Sound Forge. eg. Low frequency EQ filter revealed
a max of (44100/880 samples)*60 = 3006 RPM with hover loading.
Cyclic Dual rates 75%
70 frames (1.6 seconds) for a 360 stationary side flip roll
90 frames (2 seconds if bogged) for a 360 stationary forward flip
At 100% full rates the roll rate is impressive but a
thumb flyer like
myself can't easily control that cyclic stick, which bites too quickly
(at the edges) occasionally causing massive over correcting.
I have a feeling I am going to have to learn to use a radio tray,
neck strap and migrate to using finger and thumb on sticks :(. Or else
I may never have the precision control to fly more tidy and challenging
moves, beyond flips, loops n rolls.
Hornet X 3D setup: Twister(Axi 2208/20,
Tsunami) 27T/180T ~2900 rpm,
MS-116 ESC, MS-044 gyro, HS-50 tail, 3x Futaba 3108s, KOK Extréme
white blades, 3xTP1320 prolites ~15mins (cruising), AUW=363g. Futaba7C
That was the last of the near stock setup,
no ali bling for over a year!
I since crashed an started to add some ali on
the head.
And another similar video with some
ali and loops:
